Aladdin (1972-2001)

On the November / December cover of the American Connemara Pony Society’s excellent magazine, “The American Connemara” (The Stallion Issue), is a photo of Aladdin. As loose at the elbow and as fine a stride as you could wish for. What a walk.

Aladdin has been announced as the winner of the ACPS’ Hall of Fame award – the Tooreen Laddie Trophy – for 2009. The trophy, originally donated by Mr. and Mrs. Edward Harris, is awarded to an outstanding stallion which has made a positive influence on the breed through his offspring. Aladdin is, as it happens, actually a grandson of Laddie’s (CPBS database no. S-81) – who was exported from Ireland in 1955 and became the second stallion to be registered in the American Stud Book.

Aladdin was Catherine Mack’s ‘horse of a lifetime’. He was, says Catherine, “an athlete, first and foremost…every inch of him was built for sport”. During his career he sired 78 purebred foals, leaving behind a big number of terrific performers. Some of the stallion sons mentioned by the magazine include the 1994 An Tostal winner (Awarded in recognition of a career of outstanding achievement, both competitive and noncompetitive, of a purebred Connemara stallion – Aladdin himself received the An Tostal award in 1988) and ‘Premium Stallion’ ranked Aladdin’s Denver, the 2003 Camlin Trophy winner (Awarded in recognition of a career of outstanding achievement for purebred mares or geldings, demonstrating durability and accomplishment) and 1995 ACPS Connemara of the Year Aladdin’s Alaska. Eighteen of his female offspring are approved mares, with two attaining the prestigious ‘Premium’ rank also.

Catherine notes that Aladdin passed on “… a truly functional conformation coupled with a truly functional mind and a kind, gentle attitude towards people”. A deserving champ.

Aladdin did indeed have a lovely free stride, but in this photo he is showing it off at the trot, not the walk.

my daughter owns a grandson of Alladin – sired by Alladin’s Denver.
