Newtown Moll’s Pride and Blue Smokey were the only driven Connemaras while Niamh Varley rode Coolin America. Margaret Gorton brought two ponies from Oughterard while Caroline Lydon came all the way from Carroroe. All welocomed the soup and sandwiches sponsored by Dooley’s Bar in Moycullen afterwards and with nearly 30 participants in all this year, this event is beginning to GROW!!

We head into Winter after six consecutive days of sales at Clifden and Maam Cross. As prices for ponies continue at a low we will take a break from them to celebrate Moycullen’s historic breakthrough on the hurling fields. Last Sunday in Athenry, Moycullen Intermediate hurlers defeated Killiomardaly in their County Final and were thus promoted to the Senior ranks for the first time since 1979. Moycullen won a splendid final powered by a dominant half back line of Seosamh O’Fatharta, Mark Lydon and Tomas Ó hUigín, the faultless accuracy of Eanna Noone from placed balls and the finishing finesse of Conor Bohan.

Moycullen is now the only parish in Galway to boast two senior teams-hurling and football, not to mention a basketball team playing in the National Superleague and one of the best handball clubs in the country. Maybe we will just forget the ponies for the coming year and follow the fortunes of the sportsmen in their quest for further glory.

It is a question often asked when breeders meet this time of year. The day the foal is weaned is the most important day of its life. They download a great deal of info on that stressful day.

One way or another, with as many as 3000 foals on the ground this year, there will be a lot of broken little hearts about for the next few weeks. Many of them will be included in the 2000+ ponies – of all ages – that will come on the market at Clifden, Maam Cross and Ballinasloe in the next fortnight. It is likely that at least 60% of those will change hands, as depressed prices continue, was there ever a better time to buy?

We are sure that exhibitors will find it fascinating reading, and we’re glad to share it with Martin’s blessing. enjoy!

###############

Thank you very much for the invitation to come to Ireland, judging at the great Clifden Show. As usual, it took place on the third Thursday in August – a traditional day and date for 88 years!

In the morning it was announced that Mr.Gearóid Curren and I got the young ones, 7 classes in all, including the Junior Championship. Later we were asked to take the Progeny class, and, at the end of the day, the three classes for the different championships.

To begin I have some small general reflections on the breed, and after that some comments on the young ponies that placed at the top of the classes.

Connemara ponies with the real and true pony type:

I saw a lot of excellent Connemara ponies, a lot of excellent types, with very good bodies/conformation, with good depth and width, and with very strong bone and limbs. I was really impressed with the quality.

The majority of your breed conformed to a very good pony type, and therefore all the advantages and good points that that brings: strength, power, stamina, depth. A low centre of gravity, sure footedness, readiness for anything – for instance the hardships of nature – good feed absorption (actually some of your ponies, also the young ones, were a little bit too fat on the day in my opinion), and a kind temperament. The majority with a build, showing the possibility of obtaining a high age. I hope you are proud of your breed!

A little more motor and freedom from behind, please

The movements of the Connemara-ponies might always be discussed. What is typical for the breed? What is necessary for the uses of the pony? In my opinion some of your ponies could work a little more from behind. They could have had a little more motor. Could have used their croup and hocks a little more actively and powerfully. Let me emphasize that I’m not asking for big, exaggerated, movements. Of course not. Such movements only break the ponies down too early and are fortunately not typical for ponies at all. I’m just asking for free and natural movements, asking that the pony can move without problems, rhythmically, in step, and in time. I can accept, as a matter of fact, a rather short movement – if it is with energy, regularity, and with rhythm.

Unfortunately I saw some ponies that had some problems while moving. It was evident in their walk and especially in their trot. You feel like ‘putting more petrol in the motor’ or taking a key to unlock their loins!

I’m using a lot of space to the subject of Movement. As I said before, you have great types, conformations and bones/legs, and the Connemara pony is a fantastic pony – and yes, you have fantastic ponies in Ireland! – but I had a little feeling that the breed in Ireland doesn’t quite show the same attention to Movement as it does to all the other important things. I hope I am wrong. As you all know, the Connemara pony is not only a very good jumper, it is also a good dressage pony. For Denmark, for instance, a Connemara pony has won the European Dressage Championship. A good dressage pony always needs good Movement.

Versatility. The all-round Connemara-pony

The breed can almost do whatever you ask it to do!
So the main purpose breeding native and classical ponies must always be this: versatility! Versatility, with intelligence and a good temperament produce an all-round pony. Especially when coupled with strength, with speed, and with agility (and here is necessary a natural freedom of movement).

It takes a long time to breed a pony, and it takes a long time to reach the highest performing results, so we want to have the pony for a long time. Good composition and a natural, free movement means a long career for the pony, means less wear and tear.
A long life to the hard performing pony, competing at the highest level.

And so too the recreational, all-rounder, Connemara pony. This pony has to be a well-tempered pony, being a real and close friend of the whole family (and the modern family has a lot of leisure time). But leisure time riders also enjoy a comfortable ride on a pony that uses its back, with comfortable, elastic pasterns.

I have focused a great deal on Movement. It is a subject to be discussed, if desired. You always learn less by praise. But let me end my general thoughts with repeating the praising your ponies: I have never seen so many good Connemara-ponies before. The Irish Connemara breeders can be proud. The CPBS can be proud. Congratulations!

And now some short comments to the classes. I’m just referring to the best of the ponies. And they almost all had good movements!

Promising colts – a great beginning

Class 1. The Yearling Colts:
We saw him at once – Ballylickey Thunder, the winner (by Robe Thunder). There was type, hair, conformation, very excellent bones and good movements. Power, strenght and legitimate self-confidence. Hazelrock Mandate (Currachmore Cashel) was second. An attractive colt with very good harmony. Very good front, good topline, good forearms, good length of pasterns, and very good movement. Third came Corha’s Birthday Boy (Castleside Carrig), a big, elegant colt, long lined, long reins, good movements. In fourth and fifth places were Castle Monarch (by Castle Comet) and Monaghanstown Oscar (by Illaunurra Lad). They were both promising young stallions. Well-built with type, bones and energy, and also with good movements. A very good class, a great beginning!

Fine and feminine fillies

Class 2. The Yearling Fillies:
The first impression was that this class not so strong as the colts previously. Fortunately that changed somewhat – perhaps the fillies were a little more modest?

We found nice fillies, especially the winner of the class, Bunowen Beauty (by Castlestrange Fionn). Feminine, harmonious and well-moving. A good eye, good topline and hindquarter, good hocks, short cannon bones and elastic pasterns. A very nice filly. She was followed by another classic young Connemara mare, Abbeyside Maude (by Derroe Champ). Maude is a very good type, very expressive and feminine, with depth and width, good forearms, elastic movements.

Third place went to Rocklawn Babby (by Castle Squire). A very good type, an open feminine filly, that used her knees when moving.
In fourth we ranked the little more longlined and light, but very feminine and well-functioning, Lissroe Lorraine (by Glencarrig Prince). We saw her again in the Progeny class with her mother, Proud Native, where they got a well-deserved third place. Derrylough Ruby (by Linsfort Barney) was fifth. At first sight enough stomach for such a young mare, but there was a very good type, good croup, good pasterns, and good movements in addition.

Cool colts showing their muscles

Class 3. Two Year-old colts.
Wow. A strong and powerful class. A very, very good crop. Self-confidence. Fighting against each other both physically and in the minds of the judges. But this was just in the beginning – up close, there was no doubt for first place because he is just a star: Doonreaghan Marty (by Coolilaun Cushlawn/ Currachmore Cashel). What a young stallion. What a great fellow. Type, body and bones. Back and hindquarter with a lot of muscles. Short cannon bones, good hocks and hooves. Strength and power, self-confidence. That is pony-quality, Connemara quality. Later in the day also declared the Junior Champion. Congratulations, and good luck in the years to come.

In second place was Monaghanstown Barney (by Linsfort Barney). Very good type, very good body, good forearms, and, like the winner, good short cannon bones. Also very powerful and promising. He was followed in third place by Caoranbeg Champ. Again, a young stallion with personality and self-confidence. Here is a good type, and he has very good and free movements. With more development, a little more depth and width, he’ll become a top stallion. He also participated in the Progeny class, and here I saw his sire, Moorland Snowy River – what an excellent stallion.

In fourth place came Dun Columbus (by Kippure Columbus). Again a lot of type, a lot of body. Strong and well-built. Fifth was Dolan Pete (by Dolan Mick): looking up, with a well-placed neck and good movements, and using his hocks and his knees. Class 3 – perhaps the best young class of the day! Promising for the breed and the Society.

Being better and better…

Class 4. Two year old registered mares.
You saw her at once. Walking at the volt, feminine and with free moments, very good reins and bones: Coosheen Julie (by Janus). We saw some fat ponies. We saw some ponies which couldn’t move. This pony was just opposite. As a brilliant young mare with manners, attitude and style, she behaved like a princess. Later declared Reserve Junior Champion – but this was not her last honour of the day (read on…).

In second place was Derryeighter Freya (by Linsfort Barney). Good movements and a very good type. Nice head and neck. And a good shoulder, good croup and depth. Third was Vinura Lakita (by Currichmore Cashel) – a great type, a great front, good movements. She was followed in fourth place by Murvey Rianna (again by Currachmore Cashel) and again feminine, beautiful and a very good type, with harmony, and with movement. Sweet Hannah (by Coolilaun Cushlawn/ Currachmore Cashel) was in fifth, with body, a beautiful type and good harmony.

Of note, in eigth place, was Hazelrock Colleen by Currachmore Cashel. Currachmore Cashel was the winner of the Supreme Championship two years ago. This year he was the sire of the second placed Yearling colt; the first, fourth and eigth placed ponies in the Four to Six Year-old Stallion class; the winner of the Four and Five Year-old Mare class; and the first, second, and fourth in the Filly foals class. And now this class, with all this young beautiful mares. What a fantastic day for the progeny of Currachmore Cashel. Congratulations.

While the winner walked away…

Class 5. Three Year-old Registrered Mares.
Again a daughter of Janus in front: Castle Pearl. Well-developed, well-balanced, a very good type. The head set well on the neck, good body, good hooves and good movement. At the volt, when placed in front, she walked away from the others. That’s the way to confirm the decision of the judges. In second place was Frederiksminde Mellow 2nd (by Hazy Dawn). Second in class and second in the name, but, as a winner, a first class high-quality young mare with body, limbs and type. Third place went to Letterdyfe Rachel Rose (by Frederiksminde Hazy Match). A good type, long-lined, with reins, a good walk and trot. Moyvoon Dew Drop (by Spiddal Playboy) was fourth. Good type, good body, good hocks, and also of note here: a good walker. In fifth came Corclough Lady Bella (by Tempo Active Atlas): a good type, a free, open and active young mare, with a good front and a good shoulder.

The bay one: Look at me. Here I am!

Class 6. Three Year-old Registered Stallions.
No doubt: the bay one. Openly and expressively looking up, with style and good movements, saying “Here I am!”. Clochanard Paddy (by Kingstown Fionn). In second place came Corabbey Sebastian, also by Kingstown Fionn, a good type, good harmony, with depth and body. Third was Lettermuckoo Boy (by Lettermuckoo Lad), showing good type, good body, good topline, and with strong hindlegs. The fourth placed pony – Sheeauns Pete – is, remarkably, by Kingstown Fionn too! Pete is a harmonious pony with a good type and a good body.

Fifth place went to Connemara Eile (by Cloon-Eile Castle) again a good type with a good energy, using his knees, and the power is coming from behind. Eile was ranked as second, with his dam and his sister, in the Progeny class, later in the day. To be honest: I found the Yearling Colt class and the Two Year-old Colt class a little better than this one.

With outstanding candidates

Class 7. The Junior Championship.
Doonreaghan Marty was chosen. Dominating. Impressive. Strong. A natural choice at that time of the day, but Coosheen Julie, the Reserve, was very close. Even closer than the Championship later on!

They are both great Connemara-ponies, but also a little different in expression/type. Stepped up by different gender, Doonreaghan Marty was masculine and powerful, with sturdy strength. Coosheen Julie, with free and fine feminism, was beautiful and a little more open, with long reins. Perhaps later a match for mating, but for the rest of the day they were still competitors!

Other ponies were candidates for the Junior Championship, but, as you know, there is only room for two!

It is always a rather easy task to choose among ‘our own winners’.
As I cheerfully explained to a television crew asking me afterwards:
“Isn’t it difficult to judge such different ponies?”
“No, no, it’s not difficult”, I told them,”Just don’t think, just look and decide!”

I hope it was cut out! You have to be careful with your words, with the humour and the irony:
“The danish judge was not thinking, now we understand…!”

Well.

Judging the progeny – looking for progress

Class 15. Progeny class.
A very interesting class. The wonderful stallion, Moorland Snowy River, with a great daughter, Moorland Snow Queen, and his promising son, Caoranbeg Champ (third in the Two Year-old Colt class) were ranked first. An impressive group. In second place came the ‘Connemara Lady’ group with the progeny of Doonhill Queen (later declared Confined Champion) and a reunion with Connemara Eile (fifth in the Three Year-old Stallion class. All attractive Connemara ponies. The same words apply to the third placed group in the class: Proud Native, with a grown up daughter in Lissroe Hollyhock, and a very young Lissroe Lorraine (fourth in the Yearling filly class).

All these classes were primarily judged with Mr. Gearóid Curren, and a few with Mr. Michael Casey. They were both very sympathetic, kind and cooperative. The teams worked very well, as seen from my point of view.

Judges are always doing their best, even in the Championships!

The Championships, at the end of the day, at great shows, are always an interesting job.

It’s a new class, and for some of the judges some of the ponies are new. Now it’s not only ‘our own winners’, which are in the ring. As they are all winners and reserves, they are all very good ponies with quality – but this is not the same as being worthy of the Supreme Champion title! As a judge you are always looking for the ‘excellent and outstanding’ pony: handled perfectly, alert, behaving and performing with manners. As a judge you are looking for the special ones. The special ones that show superiority and plentiful quality in all aspects and parameters of the breed (for the Connemara pony these aspects include free and natural movements, remember).

As all other judges, all over the world, I prefer not to change too much in order and ranking at the end of the day. But sometimes it is necessary. The Championship is a new class, with new participants, and new judges. You have to take a joint and united decision, and in the end all the judges have to approve and be satisfied.

That’s the reason why the decision making process of the Championships took some time.
That’s the reason why the Reserve Junior Champion can be the Supreme Champion.

Let me emphasize, the atmosphere in the big team of judges was fine and kindly. And we found out and agreed.

A Brilliant and Wonderful young mare

Congratulations to the owner & the breeder of the Supreme Champion, Clifden Show 2011, Coosheen Julie: Mrs. Elizabeth Petch, Cork. Coosheen Julie is a very young winner, but she is the right winner, as she is a brilliant and wonderful young mare, and as she was the pony in the ring, which could get the final acceptance and applause from all the four judges. Now this young princess is crowned as a queen. A load to wear. But promising and good for the future. And for the CPBS. I hope.

The results from the Championships:

Visitor Champion: Coosheen Julie.
Reserve Visitor Champion: Mountain Cascade.

Confined Champion: Doonhill Queen.
Reserve Confined Champion: Beeckingdale.

Supreme Champion: Coosheen Julie.
Reserve Supreme Champion: Frederiksminde Mathilda.

Using the ponies – that’s what it all is about!

Friday. A wet day. And a great day with performances and competitions. I especially remember the winner of the Puissance (145 cm): A fantastic stallion – Bobby Sparrow Blue, 16 years old – and a talented rider in Justine Ohara, only 14 years old. Quite an achievement! And this remarkable stallion has won for the 3rd year in row. Last year he was jumping 155 cm, I was told. The musical ride, with the big group, was also a great performance. Quietly and well controlled.

And here was the wide and broad breed

Saturday. Sales and market. A good experience. A cultural experience. You have to treat and handle the ponies with basic respect of course, but they are still animals. Separating animals from nature. Don’t wrap them up in cotton wool. This was a real market with original ponies. I liked what I saw. Though sometimes it was a little wild. But in the modern world there are so much (perhaps too much) educational understanding. It was not the problem here. I hope you got your ponies sold! Perhaps some people at the market were just mingling, talking and meeting each either. A reasonably reason to attend, but buyers are always necessary for a succesful market!

Heaven on earth

Later at Saturday we (my Danish friends, Anita and Caroline, and me) drove on the Sky Road. What great nature you have in Connemara. What a spectacular sight. It must be heaven on earth. And through the windows of the car we saw some more Connemara ponies. I remember a fantastic dun-coloured mare with a foal. I was told that this mare was 26 years old! What? The foal was a top-foal, well-built, well-fed, naughty and full of self-confidence. Coming down the road we saw a grey mare, standing with her front in a hole, but no doubt, positively, she was also a ‘special’ one.

On Sunday we visited the Claregalway Show. A nice and cheerful show with good Connemaras, and a reunion with some ponies, and some exhibitors, from Clifden.

And then we went to Dublin, to Denmark, to Copenhagen.
It is much easier to understand Danish than Irish or English (at least for me). You should really try.

Thank you very much.

Thank you very much for the invitation to come to Clifden 2011, judging the In-Hand show classes.
Thank you to The President, Mr. Andy O’Donoghue, and the Connemara Pony Breeders Society.
Thank you to The Chairman of The Show, Mr. Henry O’Toole, and the Show Committee
Thank you to The Secretary, Ms. Niamh Philbin, and the CPBS office staff

You have all done a brilliant job, preparing and getting through this memorable show. This annually memorable show. Number 88.

Kind Regards
Martin Bloch, Denmark

Another Clifden has come and gone with the usual talking points, highlights, and meeting of friends. Lib Petch’s Coosheen Julie, a 2 yo filly who had earlier in the day been Reserve Junior Champion came the surprise Supreme Champion. Robbie Fallon’s Danish import from Gunnar Andersson, Fredericksminde Mathilda II, filled the Reserve slot. Thursday, luckily, was warm and sunny, while the weather on Wednesday (which was for younger performance ponies) was also very favourable. Friday’s Working Hunter programme however was marred by atrocious weather which cleared only just in time for the Puissance competition in the afternoon. This was won for the third year in a row by Bobby Sparrow Blue, though his competition was not of as high a standard as last year’s.

Great credit is due to the show committee and office staff for organising a hugely enjoyable festival. Congratulations also to President Andy O’Donohue for his sterling efforts during the week, which included a busy and successful meeting with International groups on Tuesday.

There were many highlights, including the new Green Hunter competition. This was an unqualified success and it is a competition that will grow and grow. Perhaps it is time to include the Wednesday ponies in the catalogue, so that a full and accurate record exists in one publication. Perhaps also the organisers could look at tidying up the various championships at the end of the day. At present, they are confusing and take too much time – even though the commentary was particularly helpful this year. Top honours for the festival must surely go to Judy Cazabon’s musical ride. This group gave two faultless displays of accurate, controlled, choreographed riding. Watching it one could only feel that we have come a long way.
