It is a question often asked when breeders meet this time of year. The day the foal is weaned is the most important day of its life. They download a great deal of info on that stressful day.

One way or another, with as many as 3000 foals on the ground this year, there will be a lot of broken little hearts about for the next few weeks. Many of them will be included in the 2000+ ponies – of all ages – that will come on the market at Clifden, Maam Cross and Ballinasloe in the next fortnight. It is likely that at least 60% of those will change hands, as depressed prices continue, was there ever a better time to buy?

After a Council meeting on Tuesday night last, and a further meeting with the RDS Horse Show committee today, the CPBS has agreed to change the date of the annual show to Thursday, 9th August, 2012; i.e. the SECOND week of August rather than the third. This arrangement - for one year only - is to avoid a clash with the RDS Show which is moving to the third week to avoid clashing with the small matter of the Olymipcs. It is a good decision by the CPBS. Breeders and exhibitors will be pleased, and of course the ponies will have a little bit more of summer bloom... if we get a summer!
