From Across the Pond…

bountyA recent visitor to Galway harbour was the Hollywood recreation of the infamous HMS Bounty. This particular incarnation of the Bounty was built in 1960 for MGM studios’ Mutiny on the Bounty with Marlon Brando. Since then, the new Bounty has starred in several feature-length films and dozens of TV shows and historical documentaries – most recently in the Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy and (slightly less memorably, I’d imagine) in the Spongebob Squarepants movie. Yours truly went to see this remarkable vessel, with a wish to see something of these incredible machines of the past and perhaps to tread on some boards that once kept such giants of film as Charlton Heston (Treasure Island), Johnny Depp, and Mr. Brando afloat. She-Who-Must-Be-Obeyed came along and was duly shocked to discover that the crew faced a five week trip back to Maine, its home port. Time has certainly improved things and, with Tom moving from Canada to the ‘Old Dominion’ of Virginia USA, he has been able to simply send us an e-mail to keep us abreast of Connemara related news there.

Autumn seems to be AGM season for many of our International friends. The Canadian one was held two weeks ago in Calgary. Heather Sheratt remains as chair, Bridget Wingate is secretary and Margot Watson is Treasurer. This newest of the overseas societies also just completed a thorough inspection tour right across their vast country. This weekend, the American CPS hold their AGM in Fairlawn, Ohio from Thursday October 1st to Sunday October 4th. Among their speakers will be Dr Phil Sponenberg who will speak about color genetics, and Dr. Sandra Gebhart, who will speak about equine metabolic disorders. We wish them well.

On a further note, it has been noticed that many of the foreign societies have developed their Public Relations aspect by use of a slogan. The American slogan is “Connemaras do it All”, the Canadian one is “For all Disciplines, For all the Family” and the Australian one is “Jump on a Connemara and Go Places”. Is this something perhaps the Irish Society should emulate? Why not e-mail us here at the website with any suggestions or thoughts you may have and we could do a post on any submissions at the end of the month.
