Hungarian Connemaras

World attention has been focused on the World Equestrian games in America these past days, where the American Connemara Pony Society are doing their utmost to fly the flag for the breed from their very own stand at the tournament. In these straitened times, breeders will no doubt welcome all the exposure for their ponies that such a huge event presents. The international market is growing more important by the day! Every mention of Connemaras abroad is to be welcomed and their success encouraged.

In light of this, and having discovered through John Tennent’s efforts earlier in the year that there was a small Connemara society developing in South Africa, we were delighted to discover recently – this time through Pat Mahon of the Glenkyle stud – that there is yet another herd of Connemaras budding in Hungary. There seems to be a genuine breeding programme in place, heavily influenced by German stock (Fredericksminde Hazy Marvel and his two sons Hazy Marshall & Hazy Smart Boy being used). Hazy Smart Boy is currently residing there.

There is no Connemara Pony society per-se in Hungary – enthusiasts are instead usually members of the Hungarian Pony Breeding Society or of the German Pony Breeding Society, but do collaborate to give special attention to the Connemara breed. Ponies in Hungary are principally used more in performance events like dressage, show jumping, or leisure riding, rather than for In-Hand showing.

While it is good news to see the Connemaras going further afield, the South African and Hungarian developments raises an issue for the powers that be. It will be necessary in the short term to include details of all those ponies on the international database, so that comprehensive records are in place for the future.

Would love to have some contact names, addresses etc to find out more about the Hungarian Connemara ponies! Is it possible to send me details? I will take the matter up with the ICCPS Exec. and get things moving.

Hi John, most of the Connemara group’s details are available on their website Connemara.hu, but the English version of the site (it’s available in German also) is under construction. The e-mail contact is listed under the Hungarian version as info@connemara.hu. Pat will also hopefully be able to furnish us with more details and even photos, his own work schedule permitting, of course.

I’ve updated the piece above to reflect any additional details Pat sent on. Any photo’s etc, are available from the Hungarian website.

      Hi John,

From what I understand, the group in question are not officially constituted yet – just a gathering of like minded people, as it were – so there is no ‘society secretary’ per se to contact. Have you tried the the e-mail address above?
