New Ridden Connemara Championship to be held at Balmoral

Pauline McLaren, of Crossowen Stud, lets us know that, following the success of the in-hand Connemara Mare class at the Royal Ulster Agricultural Society’s Balmoral show, a Ridden Connemara class has now been added to the programme. The competition had its biggest entry to date last year, with 15 ponies in the catalogue and 9 forward on the day. The first Connemara class at Balmoral was first run in 2005 as a Broodmare class for registered mares certified in foal or with foal at foot. Meeting with growing popularity, in 2009 the entry conditions were changed to open the class to all registered mares with or without a foal, and the age limit was lowered to 3 years old to allow the more mature young mares to compete as well.

Entries close early March, so any one interested in competing in Northern Ireland’s most prestigious show, should keep an eye on the website www.balmoralshow.co.uk for schedules and entry forms (usually online beginning of February). Both of the classes – in-hand and ridden – will run on Thursday 13th May 2010.
